Ložisko umožňuje snížení tření při vzájemném otáčivém nebo posuvném pohybu strojních dílů. Jeho historie sahá až k roku 330 př.n.l. kdy podle záznamů ložisko použil řecký vojenský inženýr Diadés z Pely. Od těch dob ložiska procházela dlouhým vývojem a dnes je dělíme dle nejrůzněších kritérií na širokou škálu typů dle způsobu jejich použití.
